Cold seal is commonly used on high-speed lines and for heat-sensitive products, while heat seal works across a wide range of bar and snack applications.
As your bar or snack brand grows and starts looking at larger production runs, you may eventually hear your co-packer or packaging equipment provider mention cold seal film.
So what exactly is it?
From the outside, cold-seal packaging may not look dramatically different from other flexible wrappers. The big difference is how the package is sealed and how it performs on the packaging line.
Cold seal is commonly associated with high-speed packaging applications, particularly for products such as bars, chocolate, candy and other snacks where production speed or sensitivity to heat can matter.
And there's an important distinction before we go any further:

So why are we talking about it?
Because our customers ask about it. And if you're growing a bar brand, understanding the difference between cold seal and heat seal can help you have a much better conversation with your co-packer before you choose your packaging.
Cold-seal packaging uses a specially applied adhesive system that allows areas of the packaging web to bond together through pressure rather than requiring the sealing jaws to apply the heat normally used with heat-seal packaging.
That makes cold seal particularly useful on certain high-speed packaging lines and for products where minimizing exposure to heat is important.
For a growing brand, however, the bigger consideration is often equipment compatibility.
Your co-packer may have equipment specifically configured for cold-seal material. If that's the case, it's important to know that before choosing your packaging structure.
Both can be used to create flexible packaging for bars and snacks, but they work differently.
Cold Seal Film:
Uses a cold-seal coating that bonds under pressure, allowing the package to be sealed without applying heat at the sealing point.
Heat Seal Film:
Uses a heat-sealable layer that bonds when the packaging equipment applies the appropriate combination of heat, pressure and dwell time.
Cold Seal Film:
Can be useful for products that are sensitive to heat, including certain chocolate-coated bars, candies and snacks.
Heat Seal Film:
Works across a wide range of snack and bar applications, but the appropriate sealing conditions need to be considered when the product itself is particularly heat sensitive.
Cold Seal Film:
One of its biggest advantages is its suitability for very fast packaging lines. Eliminating the need to heat and cool the seal can support higher production speeds on equipment designed for cold seal.
Heat Seal Film:
Production speed depends on the film structure, equipment and required sealing conditions. For many growing brands and production environments, heat seal remains a very practical option.
This may be the most important point for a growing brand.
Cold Seal Film:
Requires packaging equipment configured to run the appropriate cold-seal material.
Heat Seal Film:
Requires equipment capable of applying and controlling the heat needed to create the seal.
Neither is automatically the "better" choice. The right choice has to work with your product, packaging material and the equipment that will actually fill and seal it.
This is where we see brands get tripped up.
You may find a co-packer that looks like a perfect fit — only to learn that its bar-wrapping equipment is configured specifically for cold seal.
That's a conversation worth having before you order packaging.

Getting those answers early can save a lot of headaches later.
Cold seal tends to become more relevant as production volumes increase and brands move toward highly automated packaging.
For a brand producing millions of units, small improvements in line speed and efficiency can become extremely important.
But that's a very different production environment from a company launching its first bar or testing a handful of new flavors.
And that's why hearing “cold seal” doesn't necessarily mean you've reached the wrong packaging solution. It may simply mean you need to understand what your co-packer's equipment requires.
You have options.
Many emerging brands start with shorter production runs, manually fill pre-made wrappers or pouches, and move into automated roll-stock packaging as volume grows.
That allows you to test flavors, build distribution and learn what customers actually buy before committing to the production volumes associated with larger automated programs.

Cold seal isn't inherently better than heat seal — and heat seal isn't inherently better than cold seal.
They're different packaging technologies built around different products, equipment and production requirements.
If your co-packer tells you that you need cold-seal film, ask why and understand the equipment requirements before ordering packaging.
And if you're still in the earlier stages of growing your bar brand, don't feel like you need to jump immediately into the same packaging system used by a brand producing millions of bars.
Start with the packaging and production method that makes sense for where your business is today — while understanding what the next stage might look like.
